Kazakhstan’s Demand for Thermal Coal to Reach 19 Million Tons by 2032
Kazakhstan’s demand for thermal (energy) coal is projected to exceed 19 million tons annually by 2032, driven by the implementation of new coal-fired power generation projects, according to the Ministry of Energy.
The forecast was announced during a meeting in Astana between the Ministry and крупнейшие угледобывающие компании страны, where participants discussed the development of a new National Project aimed at expanding coal-based power generation.
Vice Minister of Energy Yerlan Akbarov stated that meeting future demand will require a significant and timely increase in coal production capacity.
Major coal producers have already outlined plans to expand output. Bogatyr Komir LLP intends to gradually increase production from 42.7 million tons in 2024 to 45.2 million tons by 2026, with a long-term target of 56.5 million tons by 2032.
To achieve this, the company plans to invest approximately 360 billion tenge in new construction projects, equipment procurement, and large-scale modernization of its operations. The strategy also includes the внедрение цифровых решений, such as Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES) and logistics optimization tools, aimed at improving efficiency and safety.
Shubarkol Komir JSC also announced expansion plans, targeting production of 16.1 million tons by 2026. The company plans to invest around 95.5 billion tenge (approximately $192 million) in technical upgrades and digital technologies.
The investment program includes the second phase of the CPVK-2 facility construction, modernization of equipment worth 49.4 billion tenge, and the introduction of advanced technologies such as Hovermap 3D mapping systems and autonomous haul trucks.
The Ministry of Energy also emphasized the need to expand the fleet of rail wagons and modernize railway infrastructure to ensure uninterrupted coal deliveries. These measures are considered critical for supporting the country’s growing economy and ensuring long-term energy security.
Kazakhstan holds coal reserves exceeding 33 billion tons, positioning the country as one of the largest coal resource holders globally.
